Eating Healthy over the Holidays - Dieting and Weight Loss Nutrition

The holiday season can be a real nightmare for someone trying to lose weight or keep off the pounds. Avoiding high-calorie foods, alcohol and carbohydrate-loaded goodies can be extremely difficult. And with tables full of yummy Christmas cakes, cookies and other seasonal foods one can't help but overindulge. So to prevent your self from being overwhelmed this holiday season.

1. Do not go to a party or event on an empty stomach, eat something. Before you head out have a light snack, preferably with some protein in it, as protein satisfies any food cravings and helps you eat less. Some people think that by skipping lunch or by not eating all day they can eat more later on. This is totally wrong, by skipping a meal or two, you become more hungry. And your chances for overeating go up considerably.

2. Do not try to diet during the holidays, as you are bound to fail. Set a realistic goal of trying to maintain your present weight during the holiday season. Eat a little of your favorite foods and sweets here and there so you won't go over the edge.

3. Eat slowly. This is important not only during the holidays, but everyday. By eating slowly you can taste food even better and savor every bite. Pay close attention to what is on your plate and how much you are eating.

4. Avoid alcohol or cocktails, as they are full of calories. Have wine or a lite beer instead.

5. Maintain a regular exercise program during the holidays. Exercise will not only keep the extra calories away, but will also help to reduce any holiday stress and let you let off some steam.

6. Avoid standing near the buffet table, as it will only serve as a temptation. Keep far away as possible from where the food is, so you are not tempted to nibble around.

7. Keep tabs on the portion sizes of your food . Instead of eating a large amount of food, try eating a variety of different foods. Also use a quarter plate instead of a dinner plate, so you can eat less.

8. Bring a low-calorie dish to a holiday party or make low fat versions of your favorite recipes. The internet is full of web sites that offer a variety of low calorie recipes for your favorite foods.

9. Do not let a hectic holiday season force you to eat food fast. Take your time, do not hurry, and eat at your own pace. Don't be in a hurry to finish everything on your plate at once!

10. Make decisions about what you're going to eat and stick to them. Avoid fatty or fried foods, and eat in moderation. The best way to control your weight during the holiday season is to manage what you eat, and know which foods are best for you.
